My Process
After I have an idea for a painting I will often make lots of preparatory sketches. I begin by choosing my colour pallet and mixing some of the main colours. Depending on the complexity of the design I may transfer the sketches to the canvas. I paint with palette knifes using ‘wet in wet’ technique. The underpainting begins with strong blocks of colour pushed deeply into the canvas using a 6cm palette knife. I am particularly interested in mapping the tonal values at this point. Then I switch to a 3cm pallet for more detailed work. I will adjust the background to compliment the main points of interest as the painting takes shape. Once the oil painting is completely dry, which takes several months it is varnished. I always paint to music - usually jazz!
The process called ‘Giclée’ printing uses ink jet printers with up to 12 individual colours giving smooth gradient transitions and a wide scale of colour. The goal is to produce the highest quality print possible so that the character of the original oil painting is captured in all its detail. These are printed on 300gsm cotton paper and are sent rolled in a heavy duty tube to protect them. They are ready for you to frame.
Do get in touch if there is anything more you would like to know. I look forward to hearing from you.
